Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with a great deal of pleasure and honor that I accepted the opportunity of working with you as the fifth president of ATEM. I would like to have the new ATEM be ready to jump ahead by clarifying what I intend to do and how I intend to strengthen our academic association during my tenure.

First of all, I would like you to understand that you all are great assets for ATEM and that you and I should help each other to further improve the quality of both the regional and national-level of activities of our organization. Only by developing academically appealing conferences and publications, can we lead many people to realize the benefits of using movies for pedagogical purposes, and we will be thus able to welcome to our academic association more teachers who are interested in effectively using movies in their classroom settings.

We might also consider ascending to a point where we become more aware of the necessity of enlarging our academic and pedagogical perimeter, so that we can pull in more people not simply from the field of English education, but also from fields of linguistics, literature, area studies, communication studies, and so forth. In order to attract many teachers and researchers from outside and widen our scholastic arena, we might step forward to make interesting movie-based presentations both at ATEM and non-ATEM conferences. We might start to enlighten people outside our organization by demonstrating how useful and versatile movies and other media-oriented materials can be as teaching tools. By so doing, we will enable ourselves to grow out of our traditional mold, increase our enrollment considerably, and develop into a multi-stratified academic organization whose activities will be superior in quality and in quantity to those of other movie-based English education societies.

I would like to encourage you to carry on conducting a variety of research as well as creating fine teaching materials with your ATEM colleagues. In addition, collaborating with the wonderful Korean scholars of STEM (The Society for Teaching English through Media) would be another exhilarating avenue for us to explore. There are so many innovative initiatives we can take simply by making use of our grand human resources. Ladies and gentlemen, why not grow out of our mold, and jump ahead? Let’s put our love for movies into action!

May I conclude my greetings by reminding you that I am counting on all of you to develop ATEM into an even more thought-provoking academic organization? Thank you for your kind attention.
